African leaders meeting in Ivory Coast are calling for United Nations backing for military intervention in northern Mali, which is currently controlled by rebels.

The United Nations Security Council on Thursday welcomed the withdrawal of the military of Sudan and South Sudan from the disputed Abyei area.
