Facebook has come up with a new social game, its first game that is inspired by a story in the Bible.
The game, which is based on the life of the Biblical character Moses, is created by Brent Dusing, CEO of Hexify. While Dusing is a Christian, the company that he owns is not.
Dusing told CNN that “The Journey of Moses” is “a fun, immersive, adventure game, so it’s meant to be fun but respectful to the content and appropriate for the gravity of the story.”
The game begins with when pharaoh’s daughter discovers a Hebrew baby, Moses, in a basket that is floating on a river where she bathes. The princess holds the baby close to her, and then decides to adopt him.
As the game progresses, Moses, becomes part of the royal family, and players become part of his life journey as he needs to perform certain tasks such as deciding what clothes he should wear when he will meet with Pharaoh.
Other scenes are depicted for gamers including his exile, meeting God, the burning bush, and the role he plays in leading the Jews through the desert. Along the way, Moses must find certain objects and do certain things.
The game has the usual, fun, cartoon caricatured look that is characteristic of Facebook games. There is background music and lighthearted sound effects.
There are also Biblical quotes that are sprinkled throughout the game, such as Matthew 13:58 which says, “And He did not do many works of power there, because of their unbelief (their lack of faith in the divine MISSION of Jesus).”
Interestingly, although the game is based on an Old Testament story, several of the Bible quotes that are found come from the New Testament.
“Weaving throughout ancient Egypt and the Middle East, the Journey of Moses is a fun, immersive adventure game, complete with complex characters, engaging quests, puzzles and mysteries,” Dusing said. “Whether you already play social games or you are interested in the story of Moses, we believe we have created a game that everyone can enjoy.”
Dusing told The Christian Post, “We were careful to adhere to the accounts in the Bible and the overarching spirit of the story, even vetting certain aspects with theological leaders.”
As is common in most Facebook games, a player can invite friends to join along in the game. While The Journey of Moses is free, there are elements in the game that can be purchased along the way, that will help to enrich the gaming experience.
Thorough enjoyment of the game is also subject to the addition of social connections, as some tasks require the help of other players, and are required in order to progress further in the game.
Dusing told CNN, “It’s an adventure quest game, or a map exploration game. A little bit like Zelda merged with the Moses story—that kind of game play where you’re exploring different areas and find different items and meet different people to propel the story.”
Because Moses is an Old Testament story, it is likely to have a larger market appeal. It is also the only Biblical game on Facebook, which has some 300 million people who are already playing various other social games.
This is the third social game that was created by Hexify, a Mountain View, Calif.-based company. The other two games that the company created are Legend Hunter and Treasure Legend.
