Word from Scotland: The best life comes from knowing God, the Father, and Jesus Christ
There is a crisis in the Church just now, in so many places and in so many areas – such as I have never witnessed over these past forty five years – and we so need this word, and of course, we so need every part of the Word of God.
We can only receive salvation from Jesus Christ, and from no-one else, and not from any other source.
After He saves us and rescues us, then it is one gift after another. Do you see clearly how He uses the Power of the Father? He uses that power to wash and cleanse sinners from all their filth.
In our studies we have reached John Chapter 17, where we read of Jesus Christ at prayer just before He faces arrest and the cross.
Verse 3 – Jesus speaks about eternal life! What is life and what is eternal life? What is a full life? What is the good life?
What does it means to have real life? We hear people say that you have got to have a life! Is it travelling around the world and visiting places – having lots of money – having many possessions? Some do think that makes for ‘life’, but all that makes for very little. Parties – busy social life – experience after experience – is that what makes for a full life – the good life – is that really living?
The best life is eternal life, and what is eternal life? What is the best life? “To know You the only true God and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent.” Now, not many people out there in the world would consider this to be of much value, and yet this is how Jesus explains life and eternal life and somehow our task is to communicate that to men and women who as yet do not know Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and King.
Eternal life does not begin when we die. It begins now.
Real life – a full life – the best life – is the consequence of knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ. “To know” means the closest possible relationship, and we are privileged to have this relationship with the living God, the Creator.
This is another quality which makes Christianity exclusive. This is not just one religion among many. This is eternal life. This is a relationship with the Creator. This is knowing God.
There is only one true God, and He gives eternal life through Jesus Christ, His Son, our Anointed Saviour and Lord, the Messiah.
Verse 4 – Now, the mission of Jesus Christ has been accomplished or is nearly accomplished completely. Jesus has done what He came to do. The Cross has begun. He set His face to go to Jerusalem. He did not give in. He did not give up. He did not run away or withdraw from the work the Father had sent Him to do. Jesus was not sidetracked or diverted – He would not compromise – He resisted every temptation – He was perfectly obedient.
This must have strengthened the hearts of the disciples as they overheard Him praying these words! It is very significant to hear someone in prayer.
Jesus is praying about His Return to heaven and to His former glory. For thirty three years Jesus Christ, the Son of God had been away from all that. He had laid aside His glory with God the Father and He had taken on the role of a servant without losing His identity as Son of God, and he did all this to save us from sin and to rescue us from the mess man was in.
This is why knowing Jesus Christ leads us to having the best possible life. For over sixty years I have known something of this glorious and wonderful life, and I tell you I would not exchange it for anything!
