Detroit2010 draws thousands of young Pentecostals

This week, the Detroit2010 annual convention of the National Youth Ministries is  successfully drawing thousands of young Pentecostal Christians for refueling in the organization’s bid to lead people to Christ around the world and in the U.S.

Numbering more than 12,000, the young Assemblies of God Christians have been converging at Cobo Hall for prayers, workshops and performances since Monday. Speakers include Joel Hunter, Julie Khoo, Robert Madu and comedian Michael Jr. PressPlay led worship.

The theme of the event is “Shine Your Light” which organizers say refers to the light of Jesus, which they wish to shine in Detroit and elsewhere.

The choice of Detroit as the site for the convention came after overnight prayer. Church leaders noted that “while the world is running from Detroit, the Church should run to Detroit and shine the Light of the Gospel in it,” the group’s website said.

As always, missionary work continues to be the major theme. The convention was marked with booths for different countries in the world where missionaries were needed to further the gospel, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The booth from China had a flier with a picture of a fortune cookie. The caption read, “The fortunes of 1.3 billion Chinese souls hang in the balance…Will you pray? Join us in prayer for 300 Missionaries to China,” the Detroit Free Press reported.

According to its website, the National Youth Ministries hope that by the year 2015 they will have surpassed their one million mark of people brought to Jesus.
